The Tonga USA Golf Club (nick named TUGO) was started in September 2004. Prior to its establishment, golfers of Tongan descent came together in August 2004 for the 2nd Fr. Sione Tupou Memorial (FSTM) tournament that was held at the Poplar Golf Creek in San Mateo. Due to the success of this tournament, it was realised that a formal entity is needed to organize more of such tournaments in the future on a regular basis.
Several people had been influential in keeping the club running to where it is now. They are Fr Tu’akalau Tu’ipulotu , Palei Fonua , Tevita Kongaika , Valenitino & Kalo Fa’aumu, Albert Matu , Pisila Pouanga , M Anthony Tu’iono , Matiu Fa & Tolifili Fa and Sela Wolfgramme.
As with any organization, the going will be quite rough without the necessary financial support. The following individuals and their businesses had been very supportive of the club since its beginning; Maryanne Salt and Golden Horizon Mortgage, Robert Topui and Atoll Topui Construction, Tolifili & Matiu Fa and Tanusia ma’a Tonga TV, Alvin and Mokiana Sika from Tonga and Sione and Katherine Tulua and Brite Starz Financial Services.
